What you are agreeing to
You agree to conduct your engagement with the Firm by electronic means: to receive documents through this portal and by email, and to sign the engagement letter and your intake declaration electronically through the portal's signing procedure. Under the California Uniform Electronic Transactions Act, Civil Code sections 1633.1 and following, an electronic record satisfies a law that requires a writing, and an electronic signature satisfies a law that requires a signature, between you and the Firm.
What is signed on paper
Court forms, the declarations of disclosure and the marital settlement agreement are signed by hand, in ink, as the instruction sheet for each document says. The court requires a handwritten signature on those documents, and where a document must be notarized you use a notary of your own choosing. An electronic signature in this portal never stands in for a signature the court requires on paper.
How an electronic signature works here
When you sign, the portal opens a signing session for you, shows you the exact document, asks you to confirm the required statements, and asks you to type your full legal name as your signature. The portal records your typed name, the date and time in Pacific time, the IP address of your device, the signing session identifier, and the hash of the document you signed. That record is written once to the matter's audit log and cannot be changed.
Paper copies and withdrawing consent
You may download every document from your portal at any time, and you may ask for paper copies by writing to the office at the address below. You may withdraw this consent for future documents by writing to the office; withdrawing consent does not affect documents already signed.
What you need
A current web browser, an email account you control, and the ability to view, save and print PDF files. If you cannot meet these requirements, contact the office.
